Effat University in Jeddah has announced a major milestone in international higher education accreditation, reporting that it has received recognition from the United States-based New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The university says it is the first in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf to receive the accreditation, and the fifth in the Middle East.
For prospective students and families, institutional accreditation provides an additional reference point when assessing a university’s academic standards, governance and commitment to improvement. However, students should also consider programme-specific accreditation, course content and career opportunities when choosing where to study.
What NECHE Accreditation Means for Effat University
The New England Commission of Higher Education is an independent, non-profit institutional accrediting organisation recognised by the United States Department of Education. It evaluates higher education institutions against standards covering institutional governance, academic programmes, student learning, faculty, resources and continuous improvement.
According to Effat University, the achievement reflects its efforts to strengthen academic quality, institutional practices and the student experience.
NECHE accreditation evaluates an institution as a whole. However, it does not guarantee the quality of every individual course or programme, making programme-level accreditation an important consideration for prospective students.
Dr. Haifa Reda Jamalallail Highlights the Achievement
Dr. Haifa Reda Jamal Al-Lail, President of Effat University said,
“Earning NECHE accreditation is the culmination of years of dedicated work and a sustained commitment to quality and excellence across our academic and institutional practices. We are proud of this achievement, which reflects the collective efforts of the entire Effat University community. This accreditation also marks a new step forward, inspiring us to continue advancing, innovating, and providing an educational experience that creates lasting impact for our students and community.”
The commission’s accredited institutions include Harvard University, Yale University, Tufts University and Boston University. Its review process assesses institutional effectiveness and whether universities have the resources and systems needed to fulfil their educational missions.
Effat University’s Academic Programmes and Existing Accreditations
Founded in Jeddah in 1999, Effat University is a private, non-profit university. It offers diploma, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes across several academic disciplines.
The university has also pursued international accreditation for specific academic programmes.
These include accreditation from the United States-based Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for its business programmes, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for its engineering and computing programmes, and the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) for its Bachelor of Science in Architecture programme.
For prospective students, these programme-level accreditations provide additional information when comparing courses and considering professional pathways. The relevant accreditation should always be checked against the specific programme a student intends to pursue.
Effat University describes its wider mission as providing high-quality education while advancing research, innovation and community engagement.
