Closer Saudi-Indonesia education ties could create new opportunities for students, academics and universities, with scholarships, research and student exchanges among the areas being explored.
The growing relationship between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia is attracting interest beyond trade and energy. Education is becoming an increasingly important part of the partnership, with officials discussing ways to expand academic cooperation between the two countries.
The issue came into focus during celebrations marking Saudi Arabia’s 96th National Day in Jakarta, where senior Indonesian officials joined Saudi representatives and discussed the wider relationship between the two countries.
For students and families, the developments could eventually mean greater access to study opportunities in Saudi Arabia, while universities could benefit from stronger research links and academic exchanges.
Saudi-Indonesia Education Links Are Expanding
Saudi Arabia and Indonesia already have a substantial foundation for education cooperation. According to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education, the two countries have been working to expand academic programmes, student exchanges, research partnerships and opportunities for Indonesian students to study at Saudi universities.
During his visit to Indonesia earlier this month, Saudi Education Minister Yousef bin Abdullah Al-Benyan met Indonesian ministers and university leaders to discuss cooperation in innovation, scientific research, artificial intelligence and higher education.
The Saudi Ministry of Education said the visit also focused on expanding academic and student exchanges between institutions in both countries.
For Indonesian students, this could make Saudi Arabia a more visible option for university study, particularly as the Kingdom expands programmes beyond traditional areas of study.
Saudi Arabia already offers scholarships for international students at public universities. The Ministry of Education says these opportunities cover students from different countries and include academic, scientific and research disciplines.
More Opportunities Beyond Traditional Subjects
The changing relationship could also broaden perceptions of what Indonesian students can study in Saudi Arabia.
Ganefri, a senior executive at the State University of Padang, said more Indonesian students could consider the Kingdom for subjects outside the areas traditionally associated with Saudi Arabia. Ganefri, a senior executive at the State University of Padang said,
“Saudi Arabia has been developing areas beyond religion, such as technology and other things, yet there are not that many Indonesians who are keen to pursue non-religion studies (in Saudi Arabia). But I think this is an opportunity that the two countries should explore.”
This could be particularly relevant as Saudi universities develop programmes linked to technology, data and artificial intelligence.
The Saudi Ministry of Education has also highlighted artificial intelligence, digital education and workforce readiness as important areas for higher education development.
For students considering international university options, greater awareness of these programmes could therefore widen the choices available to them.
Parents may also want to look beyond the location of a university when considering overseas study. Academic partnerships, research opportunities, student exchanges and the subjects available can all influence the experience a student receives.

Ai Fatimah Nur Fuad, a professor of Islamic studies at Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka in Jakarta, sees opportunities for Saudi and Indonesian scholars to work together on contemporary issues.
Her vision is in line with official discussions during the Saudi education minister’s visit, when both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas including scholarships, research and development, digital technology and artificial intelligence.
According to Fuad, Saudi and Indonesian scholars can collaborate to publish work on contemporary socio-religious issues in Arabic.
“This is important, because though Arabic is used widely as a spoken language, it still lags behind in terms of academic productivity, behind English-language journals and academic research articles. Since knowledge transcends geographical and political boundaries, educational collaboration like faculty and student exchanges, is highly feasible. The collaboration between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia could yield a significant impact in the academic field, alongside its Islamic and spiritual significance.”
For universities, such partnerships can provide opportunities to share expertise, develop joint research and give students experience of working across different academic and cultural settings.
What This Could Mean For Students
The education relationship is developing alongside broader Saudi-Indonesia cooperation.
At the National Day event in Jakarta, Indonesia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two countries. Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said in his speech at the Saudi National Day event on Wednesday,
“The strength of Indonesia-Saudi Arabia relation lies in the strength of our partnership and in the trust that has been built between our peoples over many years. From Hajj and Umrah to trade, investment, tourism, and new areas of economic cooperation, we have a strong foundation upon which to build an even closer partnership. Indonesia looks forward to continuing our close cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Saudi Ambassador to Indonesia Faisal Abdullah Amodi said the presence of senior Indonesian officials at the event reflected the strength of the relationship. He said,
“What we witnessed during the event is surely a reflection of the aim to strengthen cooperation in various levels and areas; a cooperation headed toward a more strategic direction.”

More university partnerships could lead to student exchanges, joint research and wider scholarship opportunities. The Saudi Ministry of Education has specifically encouraged Indonesian students to explore opportunities to study at Saudi universities through its Study in Saudi platform.
