The UOW Riyadh campus plans mark a significant step in the expansion of international higher education in Saudi Arabia. The University of Wollongong is progressing development of a new campus in Riyadh, with phased programme delivery beginning in 2025.
The initiative is closely aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals, which continue to encourage global education partnerships. Additionally, it reflects growing demand for international pathways that support students in the region with accessible, high-quality learning opportunities.
UOW Riyadh Campus Development and Phased Rollout
The UOW Riyadh campus will begin operations with English language programmes in mid-2025. These will be delivered through UOW College and designed to support students preparing for higher education study.
Furthermore, Foundation programmes are scheduled to begin in 2026. Undergraduate degrees are expected to follow in 2027, subject to academic governance and regulatory approvals.
The project is being led by the University of Wollongong Global Enterprises, the commercial arm of the University of Wollongong. Together, they are working closely with academic leaders to ensure programme quality and alignment with institutional standards. Additionally, all course development will undergo formal approval processes to ensure academic integrity and consistency with global delivery standards.
Strategic Growth and International Education Opportunities
The expansion into Riyadh represents a wider international strategy for the institution. Moreover, it highlights how universities are adapting to new global education markets and policy environments.
Interim Vice-Chancellor and President, Senior Professor Eileen McLaughlin, said the decision is part of a long-term approach to institutional strength and international engagement. He said,
“This is about ensuring our long-term strength both here and internationally by drawing on the distinctive capability we’ve built in offshore education.”
Furthermore, UOW Global Enterprises CEO and Managing Director, Marisa Mastroianni, emphasised the importance of international collaboration and education-led development. She said,
“Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 places education at the heart of national transformation. We believe in the power of education to shape social progress, and we’re proud to be part of that evolution. Our extensive global network particularly the success of UOW Dubai positioned us to pursue this opportunity. The support from Austrade also reflects our standing as a trusted education provider.”
Additionally, the UOW Riyadh campus development reflects increasing interest in cross-border education models that support workforce readiness and student mobility across the region.
What the UOW Riyadh Campus Means for Students and Families
The UOW Riyadh campus is expected to create new opportunities for students in Saudi Arabia who are seeking internationally recognised qualifications closer to home.
Furthermore, the phased approach allows learners to progress from language preparation to degree-level study within the same academic ecosystem. This continuity may support smoother transitions into higher education.
Meanwhile, families and educators may see this as part of a broader shift towards diversified education pathways in the region. Additionally, it reflects growing demand for international curricula delivered locally, reducing the need for overseas relocation. Ultimately, the initiative is positioned to support long-term education development goals while maintaining academic governance, cultural respect, and quality assurance.
