Ask a parent in the Kingdom what school costs, and they will quote you a tuition figure with the confidence of someone who has read the prospectus. Ask what they actually paid last year, and watch the number climb. Somewhere between the glossy fee schedule and the final bank statement sits a gap that catches almost every family out, and in 2026 that gap is wider than many expect.

Tuition is the headline, but it is rarely the whole story. Capital fees, registration, transport, examinations, uniforms and the steady drip of activity charges all stack on top, and once they are counted, most families find the true annual cost lands 15 to 30 per cent above the number they first budgeted for.

The Real Numbers

International schools broadly divide into three tiers, and the distance between them is stark. At the top sit the premium IB and British schools, where upper-secondary tuition alone runs from SAR 65,000 to SAR 110,000. In the middle, well-established British and American campuses charge roughly half that. At the accessible end, national-curriculum schools teaching in English, including Indian, Pakistani and Egyptian campuses, open the door from around SAR 18,000.

A primary place at a British or American school can run anywhere from SAR 80,000 to SAR 160,000, while an Indian-curriculum school delivering a recognised credential in the same city might cost SAR 12,000 to SAR 30,000. For families weighing options, curriculum is not just an educational choice but the single biggest lever on the annual bill.

Mind the VAT

Then there is tax, the line item that hides in plain sight. VAT in the Kingdom is 15 per cent. Most tuition is zero-rated, so parents assume the whole bill is spared, but ancillary services such as transport, uniforms and lunches are typically charged with VAT included. On the extras, which are exactly where budgets already tend to slip, the tax quietly compounds the total.

The Regulator in the Room

What many parents do not realise is that fees are not set freely. Under Ministry of Education rules, every private and international school must submit its proposed tuition structure for approval, and a dedicated ministerial committee reviews, decides on and monitors any increases. It is a genuine protection against the sudden, unexplained hikes that once drew complaints, and a reminder that in Saudi Arabia, pricing a school place is a negotiated act, not a unilateral one.

The practical advice is simple. Budget the extras before you sign, confirm precisely what any employer allowance covers, and get every sibling discount in writing.
