International expansion by established UK independent schools to date has virtually been exclusively done through a franchise model. In simple terms and in general, a school’s name, identity, and minimum oversight commitments are licensed and contracted to an external operator. Day-to-day decisions, staffing, curriculum design, execution, and much more sit with the local organisation. Aldenham Education Group, the exclusive international arm of the Aldenham Foundation spent years creating and receiving compliance approval for an entirely different approach: a true owner-operated model. Aldenham School Riyadh is therefore a part of the school itself, rather than a separate institution carrying the Aldenham name.

Pupils are expected to build strong foundations in English, Mathematics, Science and Computing while also developing reasoning, creativity, communication and problem-solving skills in a programme that offers 40 teaching periods from Year 1, a model that virtually no British school in KSA, UAE, or UK provide from the school working knowledge. Cross-curricular learning helps children understand connections between subjects, while structured practice supports secure knowledge and conceptual mastery.

The model also recognises the context in which the school operates. Arabic, Islamic Studies and Saudi culture form an important part of the pupil experience, allowing international education to sit alongside local identity and values. As a prime example, the school offers up to 7 periods of Arabic & Islamic timetabled across both the school day and via the extensive free enrichment opportunities available every single day, again a differentiator amongst all international schools in KSA. To put into context, 7 periods of Arabic in the primary school is effectively equivalent to a bilingual level of provision not an international school. However, the school has done this diligently and with optionality to ensure balance for both the Saudi and Arab speaking families who want their children to become confident global learners without losing fluency in their language or connection to their culture and with expats they may not need as much and their periods can be limited to 4 per week.

Specialist Teaching Introduced Earlier

One of Aldenham Riyadh’s most distinctive academic features is the early introduction of specialist teaching.

From Foundation Stage 1 (i.e. 3 years old) beginning their journey both with their homeroom teacher and exposure to specialist teachers from PE to Arabic. From Year 1 this access to teaching specialist teachers amplifies pupils including French, Art, Music, and Computing. From Year 5, the specialist model extends to core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities – again a model not offered in KSA and vast majority of schools in the UK don’t provide from our research.

In many British schools, full subject-specialist teaching begins at secondary level. Aldenham introduces it earlier, creating what it describes as a “junior senior school” experience. This requires far greater investment in specialist staff, timetabling and academic coordination, but it enables pupils to engage with individual subjects in greater depth during the later primary years.

The approach also supports a smoother transition into secondary education. Pupils become accustomed to working with different subject experts, managing more demanding academic expectations and taking greater responsibility for their learning before entering Key Stage 3.

A Growing Secondary School

Aldenham Riyadh currently welcomes pupils aged 3 to 14, with its secondary provision extending through Key Stage 3.

The Key Stage 3 programme is delivered through subject-specialist teaching and is aligned with UK National Curriculum expectations. It is also mapped towards Cambridge Assessment International Education pathways.

English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, languages and the creative arts are supported by structured academic challenge. Critical thinking, independent learning and intellectual resilience become increasingly important as pupils prepare for senior school.

The longer-term academic pathway is designed to extend into Cambridge IGCSEs at Key Stage 4 and A Levels and Cambridge qualifications at Key Stage 5. Alongside examination preparation, the planned senior model includes careers education, individual mentoring, subject-selection guidance and support for applications to universities in the UK, USA, and virtually any other international destination.

This means secondary education is being developed as more than an extension of the primary school. It is intended to provide a coherent route from early education through internationally recognised qualifications and university preparation.

Pastoral Care as a Daily Structure

Aldenham’s approach draws from the strongest traditions of British independent and boarding school education, particularly the belief that academic achievement, character and wellbeing should be developed together.

Pastoral care is not treated as a separate intervention used only when a pupil encounters difficulty. It is embedded in classroom relationships, daily routines and communication between home and school.

AEG and King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company previously announced plans for a new purpose-built K-12 campus in KAFD. Designed for pupils aged 3 to 18, the planned campus is intended to provide an all-through educational pathway and become the only school within the district.

According to the original KAFD announcement, the development will combine contemporary educational design led by one of the most renowned architects in the world with Aldenham’s established approach to academic and all-round education. The project remains an important part of the group’s future growth plans, with the latest construction, admissions and opening timelines to be confirmed by the school.

The KAFD development also signals a longer-term commitment to Saudi Arabia. Aldenham is investing in a school network intended to grow alongside Riyadh and support families seeking continuous education from the early years through sixth form.

Admissions Open For 2026–2027

Aldenham School Riyadh is currently accepting applications for the upcoming academic year as well as the 2027–2028 academic year, subject to availability within each year group.
