Saudi Arabia is set to embark on one of its most ambitious education initiatives to date with the development of 166 “schools without walls” across six cities. Announced by Tatweer Building Company (TBC), the Ministry of Education’s infrastructure arm, the project marks a significant shift in how schools are designed, not only as places of instruction but as integrated community assets supporting learning, culture and recreation.
Schools That Serve Beyond the Day
Unlike conventional school campuses, the new facilities will remain open beyond school hours, operating as community learning hubs during evenings and weekends. Local residents will have access to educational programmes, cultural activities and recreational facilities, reinforcing the concept of schools as centres for lifelong learning and social engagement.
Where They Will Be Built
The schools will be developed within residential neighbourhoods created by the National Housing Company (NHC), known as NHC destinations. Construction will take place across six cities:
- Riyadh
- Jeddah
- Dammam
- Al Ihsa
- Tabuk
- Medina
Each school will form part of a wider community centre, ensuring accessibility and strengthening its role as a shared space for residents.

A Contemporary Vision
The schools are designed using a contemporary architectural approach that reflects the identity of surrounding urban neighbourhoods. Open layouts and shared-use spaces aim to reduce physical and social barriers, encouraging interaction between students, families and the wider community. A TBC official during the project announcement, said,
“These schools are designed to serve not only students but also families and neighbourhoods, making education part of the community fabric.”
Why It Matters
The initiative aligns with the Vision 2030 Quality of Life Programme, which focuses on improving urban living standards and increasing access to cultural and educational opportunities. By redefining schools as community hubs, the programme supports several national priorities:
- Expanding access to education beyond traditional school hours
- Supporting cultural and recreational activities within neighbourhoods
- Strengthening community cohesion through inclusive shared spaces
- Promoting lifelong learning as part of everyday life

A New Chapter for Education
By extending the role of schools beyond the classroom, Saudi Arabia is reshaping the relationship between education and society. The “schools without walls” model positions educational facilities as cultural hubs, recreational venues and platforms for continuous learning.
As these projects begin to take shape, they represent a clear commitment to community-centred development and to an education system that serves not only students, but society as a whole.
