A hands-on learning initiative that’s helping schools prepare students with future-ready life skills
Today’s students are preparing for a future that demands more than academic success. From independence and safety to problem-solving and self-confidence, schools are being called to equip learners with real-life skills that go beyond the classroom. That’s where The Mobile Mechanic comes in. Designed specifically for schools, this hands-on life skills programme fills a critical gap, giving students the practical knowledge they need to stay safe, feel empowered, and take responsibility before they ever get behind the wheel.

Why It Matters
Founded by Ian Whitworth, an automotive expert with over 30 years of experience, The Mobile Mechanic Life Skills Programme was created in response to a recurring issue he saw throughout his career – too many people, especially young drivers, lacked the basic skills needed to maintain their vehicles safely.
Ian brings real tools, real demonstrations, and real-world know-how directly to students.
“What began as a mobile mechanic service,” Ian says, “has evolved into something much more meaningful. A way to teach independence, responsibility, and critical thinking.”
And the message is clear. Understanding your car isn’t just about maintenance, it’s about confidence in daily life, reliability, and staying safe in a car-dependent country like the UAE.
From The Garage to The Classroom
The first pilot took place at GEMS Founders School, Al Mizhar, under the theme Empowering Futures. Students took part in interactive sessions covering:
- Checking engine oil
- Understanding tyre pressure
- Checking and refilling windshield wipers & washers
